UPPMAX 10 years: Large-scale computing hotter than ever
The last ten years’ developments in research have made it necessary to be able to handle and analyse growing amounts of data. As Uppsala University’s centre for high-performance computing and large-scale storage, UPPMAX, turns ten, the area is hotter than ever.
UPPMAX (Uppsala Multidisciplinary Center for Advanced Computational Science) is one of six national centres in SNIC (Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing) and provides researchers at Uppsala University with access to processing and storage resources and advanced user support for their computational needs. The system is also available across Sweden through SNIC. This year marks the 10th anniversary of UPPMAX, which will be celebrated with a scientific symposium 21 November. At the same time the new UPPNEX (UPPMAX Next Generation Sequencing Cluster and Storage) will be celebrated, which brings new processing and storage capacity thanks to donations from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation.
UPPNEX has already led to a number of pioneering discoveries in genomics research, and works as a national resource through SciLifeLab. Many new findings in evolution and medical research can therefore be expected to materialise through use of the platform in the coming years.
“The celebrations will look back on the ten years that have passed since UPPMAX was founded, while also marking the official opening of the new resources by Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson. We will also see four prominent researchers in biology, chemistry and linguistics give interesting lectures, looking forward at what their research areas will be like in another ten years’ time”, says Hans Karlsson, Director of UPPMAX.
Time and place: 21 November, 13.00–16.00 in Häggsalen, Ångström Laboratory
