The Swedish Research Council has reached its decisions regarding project grants in the humanities and social sciences. Of 1 105 applications submitted, 86 projects were granted funding worth SEK 437 million. Uppsala University is receiving SEK 73 million for 20 projects.

This year’s major call from the Swedish Research Council comprised three grant forms in the humanities and social sciences: "Project Grants", "Project Grants – Conditions for Growth" and "Framework Grants in the Field of Culture and Cultural Heritage".

“The application pressure has been tremendous this year. We received 30 per cent more applications than last year”, says Kerstin Sahlin, secretary general of humanities and social sciences at the Swedish Research Council.

This year the approval rate is 8.8 per cent. To a limited extent the approval rate is affected by the fact that for a number of years the Swedish Research Council has been granting larger grants and grants covering longer periods than in the past.

The Swedish Research Council has been directed by the government to support young researchers in their careers. This year 43 per cent of granted funding in the humanities and social sciences is going to young researchers.
Uppsala University is receiving nearly SEK 73 million for 20 different projects in this year’s call.

Here are some of the largest grants for Uppsala University:

  • The social geographer Dominic Power is receiving more than SEK 10 million in a framework grant for the project “Culture, Creativity and the Economy”.
  • The linguist Ute Bohnacker is receiving SEK 9 million for the project “Language Interference or Typical Language Development? Developing Methods for Linguistic Evaluation of Multilingual Children in Sweden”.
  • The political scientist Julia Jennstål is receiving close to SEK 6 million for the project “Deliberative Citizens in Civil Society: How, When and Why Citizens Become Involved in Politics”.
  • The political scientist Sofia Näsström is receiving nearly SEK 6 million for the project “The Right to Citizenship: The Problem, Principle and Politics regarding a New Law”.
