74 young PhDs and 21 honorary doctorates will be conferred and a number of prizes and medals will be awarded during the winter Conferment Ceremony, 24 January in the University Grand Auditorium.
The Conferment Ceremony is a festive ceremony for everyone who has received their PhD during the year. Uppsala residents recognise the day because cannon salutes are fired in the morning and during the ceremony itself.
In the solemn Conferment Act in the Grand Auditorium of the University Main Building, the new PhDs receive their symbols of honour: a ring, a diploma, and a hat or laurel wreath. Also, honorary doctorates are awarded to distinguished individuals from Sweden and abroad.
The Conferment Ceremony begins at 12 noon with the procession and opening words by Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson. The festivities continue through the evening with a banquet at Uppsala Castle for the new PhDs, honorary doctors, prize-winners, family members and invited guests.
