Record number of applicants for international Master’s programmes

7,132 students have applied for Uppsala University’s international Master’s programmes starting autumn 2014, an increase of 52 per cent since 2013. The new Master’s programmes in business and management account for a large part of the increase.
Out of the 7,132 unique students who have applied for an international Master’s at Uppsala University, 3,325 have applied for Uppsala as their first-hand choice – up 60 per cent since last year. These are by far Uppsala University’s highest figures since Sweden introduced tuition fees for international students in 2011.
A large part of the increase is due to students applying for the new Master’s programmes in business and management, which together have 501 first-hand applicants and 1,622 applicants in total. Several of these programmes have immediately become some of Uppsala University’s most popular Master’s programmes.
“Finally we see a clear turning point in the number of applicants since tuition fees were introduced in 2011. We have worked hard to recruit international students for our Master’s programmes, and it is amazing to see the interest in both new and previously available courses increasing so dramatically”, says Uppsala University’s Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson.
The number of first-hand applicants to previously available Master’s programmes has increased by 29 per cent. In absolute terms, the Master’s programme in investment treaty arbitration saw the largest increase, with 109 first-hand applicants 2014, up from 41 in 2013.
The most popular programme was the Master’s programme in peace and conflict studies with 273 first-hand applicants, up 10 per cent since last year. Below you will find a list of our five most popular Master’s programmes.
