Seven awarded Gustaf Adolf medals
Four Gustaf Adolf medals in gold and three in silver have been awarded to employees at Uppsala University.
The elder Gustaf Adolf medal can be awarded to a person who has been a dean for a very long time, to a head of department who has initiated and led especially important operations and to employees who have carried out very important inquiries on a large scale or timeframe.

Lennart Dencker, professor emeritus of toxicology, at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biosciences
Lennart Dencker has successfully led and developed research on medical toxicology at Uppsala University. He is awarded the Gustaf Adolf medal for many years of services as head of department, pro-dean and dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and deputy vice-rector of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. Dencker’s efforts towards the forming of the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy and its organisation are examples valuable leadership where his dedication in combination with a constructive focus on collaboration was crucial. As a researcher, teacher and academic leader, Dencker has gained much respect and his research has been characterised by excellent scientific skill.
Marianne Carlsson, professor at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences
Marianne Carlsson has during many years conducted successful research in caring and habilitation, often in collaboration with different clinical colleagues. She is awarded the Gustaf Adolf medal partly for her leadership as head of department, partly for her efforts for equality and equal opportunities at Uppsala University. As chairman of the former Gender Equality Committee and the subsequent Council for Equal Opportunities, and in her role as adviser to the vice-chancellor she has made important efforts to advance Uppsala University’s positions in this important area.
Håkan Lanshammar, professor of automatic control and systems analysis at the Department of Information Technology
Håkan Lanshammar is awarded the Gustaf Adolf medal for his long and successful leadership at one of Uppsala University’s largest departments. As head of the Department of Information Technology for a period of twelve years, he worked for a healthy and creative work environment with every employee’s best in mind. He has gained wide support and trust both within and outside the department. His leadership has been central in shaping the department into the successful organisation it is today. Håkan Lanshammar has also conducted internationally prominent research in biomechanics, and has been a much appreciated teacher.
Jan-Åke Schweitz, professor emeritus of materials science at the Department of Engineering Sciences
Professor emeritus Jan-Åke Schweitz is awarded the Gustaf Adolf medal for his successful research in materials science as well as for extensive and skillful leadership in both research and teaching. He was one of the originators behind the Ångström Laboratory, as well as being the initiator of the Master’s Programme in Materials Engineering. Jan-Åke Schweitz has been director of an extensive centre for competency in microsystems technology and has been section dean of the technology section 1999–2011. He is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences since 2003.

Doris Solander, administrative director of the Faculty Office for Medicine and Pharmacy
Doris Solander is awarded the Hedlinger silver medal. Since 2001 she is administrative director of the Faculty Office for Medicine and Pharmacy. The medal is awarded for her solid and loyal service to the University. Doris Solander has gained a strong trust from both the academic management, colleagues and employees. With knowledge and diplomatic ability she contributes to solutions that benefit the whole University.
Bo Waerme
Bo Waerme is awarded the Hedlinger silver medal. He has served the University for 33 years as labour jurist and as deputy human resources director. He has in a responsible way always seen to the best of the University. During several periods he has been acting human resources director. His service has been characterised by responsibility and knowledge.
Jeanette Backman
Jeanette Backman is awarded the Hedlinger silver medal for her long service at Uppsala University. She was worked on both department and university level. In her work she has showed a great sense of duty and integrity, as well as contributing to a positive work environment.
