In commemoration of Anders Ångström, one of Uppsala University’s most well-known scientists, a number of activities will be organised this autumn. To begin with, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony on his birthday 13 August by his grave.

Anders Ångström (1814–1874) has named the Ångström Laboratory and the measurement unit Ångström in physics, which is used in spectroscopy and for measurements in nuclear physics (1Å = 0.1 nanometers). He was a pioneer in his field, spectroscopy, and became professor at Uppsala University in 1858. Nine years later, 1867, he became the first person to describe the spectrum of the aurora borealis in one of his many groundbreaking studies. Anders Ångström was also the University’s vice-chancellor 1870–1871.

The 13 August Uppsala University commemorates Anders Ångström’s life with a wreat-laying ceremony by his grave at Uppsala Old Cemetary.

The autumn’s festivities are still being planned and will be presented at a later date.
