A moment of silence at European Higher Education, 27 april
The European University Association (EUA) has taken the initiative for European universities to unite in a minute of silence on Monday 27 April at 12:00 noon. The purpose is to express our joint condemnation of all forms of violence against education and to commemorate the victims of the terrorist attack on Garissa University College, Kenya, on 2 April, when 147 people were killed and 79 injured.
Uppsala University is backing the initiative and urges staff and students to take part.
The EUA emphasises that all forms of violence against, or attacks on, education and training contravene the universities’ basic values regarding freedom of thought and expression, tolerance and autonomy. Violence undermines young people’s ambitions and fundamental right to receive education and be able to contribute to development in their home countries, society and the world. The EUA therefore urges all universities in Europe, and also in other continents, to show solidarity by uniting in condemnation of all forms of violence against education.
At Uppsala University, it is up to every individual employee and student to arrange whether and how they can join in the one-minute silence on 27 April at 12:00 noon. The University will fly its flag at half-mast on the day in remembrance of the victims at Garissa and to demonstrate our solidarity in condemning violence against education.
