SciLifeLab widens its infrastructure offer

SciLifeLab strengthens its available infrastructure and offers further support to Swedish researchers with activities at universities in Gothenburg, Linköping, Lund and Umeå.
Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) is a centre for molecular biosciences with the focus on health and environmental research. SciLifeLab is a national resource and a collaboration between four universities: Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University and Uppsala University.
To widen the range of technologies and competences that are available for Swedish researchers within SciLifeLab the board has decided to integrate technology competences from other Swedish universities into the center. These technology laboratories will complement the current center infrastructure and will be integrated into the SciLifeLab technology platform organization.
At the SciLifeLab board meeting April 13 it was decided that six such facilities will be financed and integrated in the center as of 2016.
The board has granted financial support to the following functions:
• Systems Biology at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg that will be integrated in the platform Bioinformatics
• Metabolomics at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Umeå which will form a new technology platform
• Integrative Clinical Genomics at the University of Gothenburg that will be integrated in the platform Clinical Diagnostics
• NMR for Life (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) at the University of Gothenburg that will be integrated in the platform Structural Biology
• Next Generation Sequencing at Lund University that will be integrated in the platform Clinical Diagnostics
• U-READ (Unit for Rapid Engineered Antibody Development) at Lund University that will be integrated in the platform Drug Discovery and Development
During 2016 a new facility for cryo-electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) will be started, which will operate both at SciLifeLab in Stockholm and at Umeå University.
The platform Bioinformatics will also be complemented with a part for systems biology at Chalmers University of Technology. The facility Bioinformatics Long-term support (WABI) also expands and complements the staff in Stockholm and Uppsala with personnel in Lund, Linköping, Gothenburg and Umeå.
