Lena Claesson-Welsh recruited to the SciLifeLab management

Starting 1 July, Lena Claesson-Welsh will be Site Director for SciLifeLab in Uppsala. As part of the SciLifeLab management, she will play an important role in the future development of the center.
The Site Director post in Uppsala is an appointment in the SciLifeLab management that will take effect 1 July. It corresponds to the post in the Stockholm node held by Mats Nilsson.
Besides her duties in the national center management, Lena Claesson-Welsh will also be responsible for the activities at the Uppsala node.

I am deeply impressed with the very successful establishment of the SciLifeLab since the start in 2010 and I am proud to have the opportunity to both administer and develop it further’, Lena Claesson-Welsh says.Lena Claesson-Welsh is Professor in Medical Biology at Uppsala University and her research focuses mainly on vascular biology – the formation of blood vessels in the body.

It is a research area which connects the clinic, basic biology research and the industry, which makes it a very dynamic and applied research environment that I appreciate’, Lena Claesson-Welsh says.Lena Claesson-Welsh has extensive previous managerial experience, in particular from her time as Head of the Department for Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, which is one of the largest departments at Uppsala University. Since 1996, she is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy, class of medicine, and since 2014 a member of the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters.
She has been active within SciLifeLab since 2011 when she established the Biological Visualization (BioVis) facility. The facility provides researchers with state of the art instrumentation and expertise in flow cytometry and microscopy. She currently serves as Director for BioVis, and is also a member of the SciLifeLab faculty and affiliates her research with SciLifeLab.
‘I am very interested in creative research environments and have been involved in SciLifeLab’s activities both through directing the work at BioVis and as a user of other facilities in my own research. Now, I’m looking forward to contribute to the SciLifeLab management. I see a great potential for the Site Director to provide strategic support to the research community, thereby promoting Swedish research to a world class level’
