Peter Howell has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Languages at Uppsala University. His research has contributed greatly to the study of epigrams, one of the most important genres in Greek and Roman poetry.

Peter Howell, Honorary Research Associate at the Royal Holloway, University of London, played a pivotal role as the study of Roman poetry from the Flavian dynasty (81-96 A.D.) developed into a vibrant and productive research field in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

His main research interest has been Martial, the most renowned author of epigram poetry during antiquity. Howell’s work on the interpretation of Martial’s poetry has shown how it can be used to broaden our knowledge of the mentalities and social dynamics of ancient Rome, among other things.

Over close to two decades, he has been associated with the epigram research in the field of Latin studies at Uppsala University, regularly contributing valuable input and inspiring discussions.
