In conjunction with the Swedish Academic Collaboration Forum China, held in Shanghai on 17-20 November, Uppsala University hosted a joint alumni reception with Lund University at the restaurant Cotton’s on 17 November.

Over 80 alumni, faculty and staff from Uppsala and Lund participated in the event, where both Uppsala’s Vice-Chancellor Eva Åkesson and Lund’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Eva Wiberg invited all alumni to connect and re-connect with their alma mater. In her speech, the Vice-Chancellor stressed that despite us representing different universities, we have a lot more to gain if we cooperate when we do activities overseas.

One of the alumni, Ou Yu, or ‘David’ as his English speaking friends call him, studied at Uppsala University in 2009-2010. He came to Uppsala as an exchange student from Tongji University in Shanghai. He then developed an interest in Scandinavia and wanted to experience a year abroad. Now, he works as a Senior User Experience Designer for the technology company Nuance.

‘My year in Uppsala taught me to be more independent, and this is something I have great use of now in my work’, says David.

From his year in Uppsala, he especially remembers the Valborg celebrations, the river rafting on the Fyris River and the music party behind Ekonomikum. ‘It was really nice to meet up again with other alumni and as well the professors from Uppsala University. I hope that the University will continue to arrange events like this, and also that we can help out here in Shanghai.’
