Uppsala physicist ranked as one of Europe’s foremost

2016 is the first year that the grant has been awarded. The initiative for the Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant comes from four separate foundations: the Erling-Persson Family Foundation, the Kempe Foundations, the Ragnar Söderberg Foundation and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.

Researchers at Swedish universities regularly apply for European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants. Sometimes, however, despite their high ranking, their evaluation panels do not award them funds since there is a limit on the money available. The Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant supports these eminent researchers at Swedish universities by granting them an equivalent amount.

The Swedish Foundations’ Starting Grant encourages Swedish researchers to continue applying for funding from the ERC as these are the most prestigious research grants in Europe. Researchers awarded a Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant have a good chance of success in future ERC calls.

The scientific evaluation of projects awarded a Swedish Foundations' Starting Grant is based on the one done by the ERC panels. The research grant awarded is also equivalent to an ERC Starting Grant. This means that the grant is EUR 300 000 per year for one year at a time. It is guaranteed for five years on condition that the application is regularly renewed and that the researchers do not receive ERC funding.
