Sustainable society focus of new Swedish–Chilean cooperation

At a ceremony in November held in Santiago, Chile, Uppsala University signed an agreement for a project which will strengthen cooperation in research and education between Swedish and Chilean universities. Apart from Uppsala University, the project also involves Lund University and Chile’s two most prominent universities: Universidad de Chile and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Within the three-year project, a number of large research seminars will be organised where researchers from the four universities meet to discuss common challenges on the topic “A sustainable society”.
“This is a great initiative that is highly relevant to the cooperation between Sweden and Chile,” says Sweden’s Ambassador to Chile, Jakob Kiefer, who also took part in the meeting.
The Uppsala delegation in Santiago consisted of Leif Kirsebom, Marika Edoff, Gloria Gallardo, Helene Martinsson-Wallin, Irene Molina, Roger Herbert and Viviana Stechina. Gustaf Cars and Fredrik Berggren also took part as representatives for the International Office at Uppsala University.
During the week in Santiago, the participants got to meet and discuss with colleagues in similar areas from the participating universities in Chile. Together they could identify strengths of their respective countries and common challenges to continue working on.
Additionally, a mingle was held at the Swedish Embassy as well as meetings with the Chilean funding bodies CORFO and CONICYT.
The first concrete step of the cooperation is a research seminar which will be held in Lund in August 2017.
