Nordic medical prize to Uppsala researcher
Christer Betsholtz, Professor of Vascular and Tumour Biology at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University, is being awarded the Anders Jahre Senior Medical Prize 2017 including a grant of NOK 2 million.
Anders Jahre’s Awards for Medical Research recognise successful research in basic and clinical medical research. They are awarded annually by a Selection Committee at the University of Oslo. This year’s prize will be presented at a special awards ceremony in Oslo on 15 September.
Christer Betsholtz is receiving the prize for his pioneering research on how blood vessels are formed and function. With better knowledge about the body’s blood vessels, conditions improve for treating everything from tissue inflammation to Alzheimer’s, psychoses to brain tumours.

About Anders Jahre’s Awards
Anders Jahre (1891–1982) was a Norwegian shipowner, entrepreneur and philanthropist. In the early 1950s, he began donating millions to the University of Oslo. This was used to establish the Anders Jahre Foundation for the Promotion of Science. Half of the funds from the foundation are allocated to medical research, a quarter to legal research, and a quarter to chemical and technical research. Anders Jahre had a special interest in medical research, and decided that part of the foundation’s funds were to be used to award an annual Nordic medical prize for outstanding international research.
