Two Uppsala researchers named Ragnar Söderberg fellows in medicine

Uppsala researchers Henrik Boije at the Department of Neuroscience and Kaska Koltowska at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, have together with three colleagues at other higher education institutions been made Ragnar Söderberg fellows in medicine 2017. The five researchers get SEK 8 million each over five years, to further develop their scholarship.

The Ragnar Söderberg foundation has now decided which five young researchers are to receive grants in the field of medicine 2017. They have been selected for their scholarly rigour and skill, and potential to autonomously and successfully lead research projects and become committed research leaders, through a thorough peer review process with some of the country’s most prominent researchers as subject specialists.

The Ragnar Söderberg fellows in medicine 2017 at Uppsala University are:

Henrik Boije, the Department of Neuroscience, researches movement coordination in vertebrates. He studies how the spinal nerve cells are organised in order to switch between different patterns of movement such as walking, running or tip-toeing. Specifically, he studies a group of nerve cells and has chosen zebrafish as the model organism. In the long term, his research can contribute to understanding the role of degradation of neural circuits in traumatic injuries and degenerative diseases.

Kaska Koltowska, the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, studies the growth of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is important to the immune system and to maintaining the body’s fluid balance. She particularly wants to understand how the growth of the lymphatic system is regulated. In time, her results can contribute to finding new target molecules for medicines.
