Grants for research in sustainable global development

The development research grants are awarded to Swedish research of particular relevance for low-income countries (Research Project Grant) and low-income countries and lower-middle-income countries (Swedish Research Links). The research must contribute to creating opportunities for better living conditions for people living in poverty and oppression and contribute to equitable and sustainable global development. Funding is awarded to research of the highest scientific quality in all scientific fields.  

This year’s call granted funding to 50 out of 307 applications. The Swedish Research Council is providing a total of SEK 150 million for the entire 2017–2021 grant period.  

“The projects are of high scientific quality and the research has great potential to contribute knowledge for sustainable development in low-income countries,” says Kerstin Sahlin, who is Secretary General of Humanities and Social Sciences and has scientific responsibility for the Committee for Development Research. “It is also clear that the research findings contribute to knowledge on a more global level – that is, to global development goals.”

• Biplab Sanyal, Department of Physics and Astronomy: Mechanisms for charge transfer dynamics in materials for green energy, Condensed Matter Physics, Partner country: India, SEK 1,125,000
