Uppsala researchers receive SEK multimillion grant towards strong research environment

The Swedish Research Council has announced the ten researchers who will receive Distinguished Professor Grants for 2018 and the subsequent ten years. The purpose of the grant is to create long-term favourable conditions for the most distinguished researchers at Swedish higher education institutions to build strong research environments. Leif Andersson, at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology will receive one of the ten grants.
The Swedish Research Council’s Distinguished Professor Grant programme aims to create conditions for the most distinguished researchers to conduct long-term research with great potential and a high level of risk-taking. The grant will provide the best possible conditions for establishing or building research environments of the highest quality. The researchers who are awarded grants can receive up to SEK 5 million a year for ten years. This contributes to longevity and security, which paves the way for groundbreaking research that can have a major impact on society.
The Swedish Research Council is awarding a total of nearly SEK 490 million in this year’s call. Ten of the 112 applicants were awarded grants.
One of the grants, in the amount of SEK 47.6 million, will go to Leif Andersson, Professor at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology at Uppsala University for the project “The Genetic Background of Biodiversity”.
