Uppsala University attends events in connection with World Economic Forum in Davos

On 24 January, Uppsala University will take part in “The Swedish Lunch” – an event arranged in connection with the large international World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, which brings together some of the world’s most powerful decision-makers in politics and business. One of the speakers at the lunch will be Uppsala researcher Maria Strömme, Professor of Nanotechnology.
At the WEF in Davos, business leaders, politicians and researchers will convene to discuss current global issues in a huge international forum.
Lunch to inspire
In conjunction with WEF, a smaller event called “The Swedish Lunch” is also arranged for about 300 international participants. The lunch was created a few years ago by Swedish twin brothers and entrepreneurs Marcus and Alexander Widegren. Marcus is an alumnus of Uppsala University, where he studied economic history, among other things.
The purpose of the lunch meeting is to bring together leaders, researchers and innovators to share experiences and spread inspiration in research and innovation. The focus of the 2018 meeting is to discus what will create the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”.
Nanotechnology on the agenda
Uppsala University’s Maria Strömme, Professor of Nanotechnology, has been invited to the lunch as one of the speakers. Strømme will talk about her research in functional materials and nanotechnology and its possibilities. She will also participate in a panel on technology and innovation issues moderated by Maria Rankka from the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce.
Other speakers include environmental activist and entrepreneur Boyan Slat from the Dutch company The Ocean Cleanup, which works to counteract plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, and Lars Hamberg from the Stockholm-based company Gavagai AB, which develops technology for analysing text data flows on the Internet and in social media.
Uppsala University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Anders Malmberg, University Director Katarina Bjelke and Thomas Fredengren from University Administration will also attend the meeting.
“This event is a good opportunity to show some of the exciting, cross-border research on new smart materials conducted at Uppsala University. It is also an chance to forge new, valuable international connections and build relationships with important actors in industry and politics. These are the kinds of things that are of great long-term importance for the development of both Uppsala University and the whole of Sweden,” says Deputy Vice-Chancellor Anders Malmberg.
Anna Malmberg
