Meet three of our new honorary doctors

Every year, all faculties at Uppsala University appoint one or several honorary doctors which are connected to the respective faculties. 22 new honorary doctorates were conferred in January 2018. Watch interviews with three of them.


The title of honorary doctor is awarded to a person who has made significant scholarly contributions or in some other way promoted research at the University. We have interviewed three of the new honorary doctors – on their research and on their relation to the university.

Quentin Skinner is Barber Beaumont Professor of the Humanities at Queen Mary, University of London and honorary doctor at Uppsala University’s Faculty of Arts. His different contributions to historical research have been very important and influential for several decades.

Elaine Scarry is the Walter M. Cabot Professor of Aesthetics and the General Theory of Value at Harvard University and honorary doctor at Uppsala University’s Faculty of Theology. She has been hailed as one of the most important contemporary voices for her defence of humanist values and democracy.

Fang-Rong Chang is Professor of Pharmacognosy at Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan and honorary doctor at Uppsala University´s Faculty of Pharmacy. His main field of research is in biologically active substances from natural products (including traditional Chinese medicines).
