SEK 59 million for Uppsala research in security in the digital society

The Internet of Things (IoT) ties together networks of small built-in units with the Internet. They are increasingly being used in important public infrastructure, such as hospitals, transport systems, smart buildings and power grids. But the technology builds on open systems and network solutions that are vulnerable to attack. Unauthorised access and improperly designed IoT units can cause major harm to individuals, companies and society. New secure methods and platforms are needed.

SSF is now investing SEK 300 million in ten projects in cyber and information security.

“Our investment in research in cyber security is very important,” says Lars Hultman, CEO of SSF. “It’s a matter of removing the vulnerability in many online components and large networks.”

Two of the ten project grants are going to Uppsala University:

• Bengt Jonsson, Professor of Computer Engineering at the Department of Information Technology, Computer Engineering, will receive SEK 32 million for the project aSSIsT: Secure software for the Internet of Things
• Thiemo Voigt, Professor of Wireless Sensor Networks at the Department of Information Technology, Computer Engineering, will receive SEK 27 million for the project LifeSec: Don’t hack my body!

The Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) finances research in science, engineering and medicine with around SEK 600 million a year. SSF is a free, independent actor in the public research funding system.
