New policy report on innovation ecosystems in Europe

In Brussels at the end of 2016, a kick-off was held for a new university network – the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (the Guild) – with Uppsala University as one of the founding universities. The aim of the network, which consists of 19 European universities today, is to achieve a clearer voice in Brussels and influence European research policy, but also contribute research expertise of the highest quality in important future issues.

Now, the Guild has published a policy report on strengthening Europe’s innovation ecosystems – Bolstering Europe’s innovation ecosystems:  Research, creativity and co-creation.

In the report, it is asserted that innovations are crucial, not just for Europe’s global
economic competitiveness, but also for a sustainable development of our societies and cultures, for our citizens’ health and well-being and for the protection of our environment. The view is that public policy must endeavour to strengthen Europe’s innovative potential by creating the right conditions for innovators to succeed in Europe, both through adequate public grants for research and innovation (R&D) and by stimulating private investments. In the report, it is established that the prerequisite for innovation, invention and creativity is knowledge and generation of knowledge is what makes the universities a critical part of the innovation ecosystems.
