Collaborative project to develop smart electric vehicle charging
Through the Swedish Electromobility Centre, Uppsala University has entered into a partnership with Vattenfall AB and CEVT (China Euro Vehicle Technology AB) to develop smart EV charging: output that is controlled over time to optimise EV charging while it is simultaneously adjusted to the local electricity grid.
The aim of the project is to combine the knowledge and experience with mathematical modelling of complex systems found at Uppsala University with the knowledge found in the electricity grid industry and electric vehicle industry.
“The goal is to develop a mathematical model for smart EV charging that can be directly used by industry,” says Joakim Munkhammar, project manager at Uppsala University.
The number of rechargeable vehicles in Sweden is rising sharply and this is putting increasing demands on the charging infrastructure. It must be available and reliable in order to support the use of electric vehicles in the future.
In a future scenario with a large proportion of electric vehicles in Sweden, problems of stability in the electricity grid could ensue, as shown in earlier studies. Introducing ‘smart EV charging’ is one way to resolve the issue. This refers to moving EV charging in time or regulating its strength to adapt the charging to the EV user, the local electricity distribution network and the local power plant, for example, to match it against local solar energy production and local household electricity use.
The Electric Transport Group at Uppsala University has been granted funds to develop smart EV charging that is compatible with the Annex D charging standard, which is an addition to IEC 61518-1 and is still in development. The researchers will first study the potential for smart EV charging and then develop mathematical models for it that can be applied directly to existing and future systems.
