Increased opportunities for international exchanges this year
Uppsala University has been granted a significant increase in the number of Erasmus+ scholarships in the EU/Europe for the academic year 2018–2019. The same applies to exchange places outside Europe within the Erasmus+ ICM programme. This means that the University has been granted the most funds of all Swedish higher education institutions. As a result, more students and employees can apply for an exchange period at universities around the world.
As part of its internationalisation efforts, Uppsala University is promoting participation in exchanges in other countries on the part of more students, teachers and other personnel. Equally important is the acceptance of students, teachers and personnel from other countries. The EU-funded Erasmus programme is unique in its scope and makes exchanges possible through scholarships.
The overall objective is to improve the quality of education and other activities. The programme also leads to greater transparency among educational programmes in different countries.
The University’s aim is to offer opportunities for international experience and to offer a global educational environment in which to operate. The number of Erasmus scholarships for European studies is increasing from 415 in the previous allocation to 650. The number of scholarships for placements is increasing from 150 scholarships to 250 scholarships for the 2018–19 academic year.
“This means more students can take part in placement abroad and get professional experience and contacts in the European labour market – something that leads to increased employability. The statistics for Erasmus placement indicate that a third of all students on placement are offered work where they were on placement,” says Erika Dabhilkar, Head of the Student Affairs and Academic Registry Division at the International Office.
The number of scholarships for teacher exchanges within Europe increased from 30 to 70, and for further training of personnel from 42 to 100. The number of exchange places outside Europe, which both students and employees can apply for, total 160 places for the upcoming academic year.
By conducting research and education in cooperation with institutions in low-income and middle-income countries, the University can contribute towards including these institutions in the international academic community and developing independent research environments. Cooperation with these countries also broadens the research issues to be addressed and perspectives in degree programmes, thereby helping promote the quality of its own activities.
The following higher education institutions are among the exchange places outside Europe.
European University of Tirana (Albania), Royal University of Bhutan (Bhutan), Ilia State University (Georgia), Kinneret College (Israel), Queen’s University (Canada), KIMEP (Kazakhstan), the American University of Beirut (Lebanon), the University of Mandalay ( Myanmar), Saint Petersburg University and the RGGU (both Russia), Central University of Technology (South Africa), National Taiwan Normal University (Taiwan), the University of Tunis and the University of Tunis El Manar (both Tunisia) and Hanoi University of Science & Technology (Vietnam).
