This year the Torgny Segerstedt Medal goes to Peter Wallensteen, a post-retirement professor at Uppsala University. He receives it for his extensive contributions to peace and conflict research.

The medal was instituted in honour of Torgny Segerstedt for his contributions as vice-chancellor of Uppsala University for 23 years and was first presented in 1988.

Explanatory statement:

Peter Wallensteen is post-retirement professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University. During the 1985–2012 period, he was the first holder of the Dag Hammarskjold Professorship at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research. Wallensteen founded the unique Uppsala Conflict Data Programme, a key resource for research on the subject throughout the world. He has also participated in international conflict settlement processes and frequently collaborates with practitioners and policy makers. While working to establish his subject, Peter Wallensteen has been focused on creating interfaces and exchanges with other parts of the world, particularly in conflict-ridden and poor countries. Over the years he has inspired many students and colleagues, both in Sweden and internationally, to become associated with the relatively new subject of peace and conflict research.

The medal is presented every two years to “Swedish scientists for especially outstanding contributions within the humanities and social sciences”. The medal comes with prize money. It will be presented at the winter conferment ceremony on 25 January 2019.
