New Uppsala University Board members
The Swedish Government has now appointed eight external members to the Uppsala University Board for the three-year period ahead. The new Chair is Anne Ramberg, lawyer and former Secretary General of the Swedish Bar Association. Three members have also been appointed by the teachers at Uppsala University.
The eight government appointees will take their seats on the Board on 1 May 2020, and their mandate will last until 30 April 2023.
Four of the members are new:
- Anne Ramberg, lawyer and former Secretary General, Stockholm, Chair
- Svante Pääbo, professor, Leipzig
- Johan Söderström, managing director, Västerås
- Linus Tunström, theatre director, Stockholm
The other four, who have been members of the previous Board, are now appointed for a further period:
- Ulla Achren, head of administration, Turku (Åbo)
- Elisabeth Dahlin, Ombudsman for Children, Stockholm
- Helen Ängmo, director general, Stockholm
- Gunnar Svedberg, professor emeritus, Stockholm.
The University Board comprises a total of 15 members including the Chair. Eight are appointed by the Government, and the University Vice-Chancellor is a permanent member. In addition, there are three members appointed by the teachers at the University and three appointed by the students.
The teacher-appointed members are:
- Johan Elf, professor at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology
- Lisa Ekselius, professor at the Department of Neuroscience
- Sven Widmalm, professor at the Department of History of Science and Ideas.
These members, too, have been appointed for the period from 1 May 2020 to 30 April 2023, and except for Johan Elf have already sat on the Board for a previous term of office. The deputy member appointed by the teachers for the same period is Shirin Ahlbäck Öberg, senior lecturer and associate professor at the Department of Government.

The University Board
The University Board consists of 15 members, including the chair. The majority of the board members are appointed by the government. The University’s vice-chancellor is a permanent member. In addition, three members are appointed by the teachers at the University and three members are appointed by the students. Staff organisations each appoint a representative. Staff representatives have the right to attend and express their opinions.
