Björkén Prize for tumour biology
Christer Betsholtz, professor of tumour biology, has been name the 2020 recipient of the Björkén Prize – one of Uppsala University’s biggest scientific awards for outstanding research
Explanatory statement:
Professor Christer Betsholtz works at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University. He is being recognized with this prize for his pioneering discoveries of cellular and molecular mechanisms behind newly formed blood vessels, vascular permeability and other functions in blood vessels during embryo development, in adults and in cases of disease. His discoveries provide increased conceptual understanding of vascular and growth factor biology, which in turn can result in ideas for treatment of diseases of the heart, brain and kidneys and of cancer. Christer Betsholtz’s research has contributed to making Uppsala University a leader in the research domain.

The Björkén Prize is one of Uppsala University’s biggest scientific awards for outstanding research. It was first awarded in 1902 and is alternately awarded in four different fields. The 2020 prize is given in the category “Theoretical disciplines of medical sciences”.
