In the period 2010–2020, five Uppsala University scientists were included in Clarivate’s annual “Highly Cited Researchers” lists of the world’s researchers whose work is cited most frequently.

The company Clarivate’s annual list is based on analyses of citation data from Web of Science. When researchers cite (refer to) one another’s work, it indicates which of them are writing the scholarly articles regarded as being the most significant and useful. The analyses have identified the researchers in 21 broad academic fields who were cited most (the top 1%) for the whole period from 2010 to 2020.

Swedish higher education institutions have a total of 47 researchers on the list – and five of them work at Uppsala University:

  • Dan I. Andersson, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology.
  • Stefan James, Department of Medical Sciences and Uppsala Clinical Research Center (UCR).
  • Jonas Oldgren, Department of Medical Sciences and UCR.
  • Mia Wadelius, Department of Medical Sciences.
  • Lars Wallentin, Department of Medical Sciences and UCR.

“I think it’s great news that Uppsala University’s medical and pharmaceutical research is having such a big international impact. These scientists’ findings and results have been hugely important for the development of modern medicine and treatment,” says Mats Larhed, Vice-Rector for the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy.

The list also includes people who have secondary research ties with Uppsala University. One outstanding example is the University Vice-Chancellor Anders Hagfeldt, whose most recent research position was in Physical Chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL).

A total of 6,602 researchers worldwide are on the list. The US is the country with the highest number, followed by China, and the UK comes third.
