On 28 January Elisabeth Rynning, visiting professor in medical law at the Faculty of Law, was awarded H.M. The King’s Medal of the 12th size with the ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim for significant contributions to the Swedish judicial system.
Elisabeth Rynning was professor in medical law at Uppsala University’s Faculty of Law from 2003–2012. Since the beginning of the year, she is back as a visiting professor at the Faculty to fortify the research environment in medical law at Uppsala University.
Elisabeth Rynning, who was awarded her PhD in public law in 1994, was appointed as a docent in public law in 1996 and after her professorship in medical law at Uppsala University was Justice of the Supreme Administrative Court until 2016, when she was appointed by the Riksdag as the Chief Parliamentary Ombudsman.
Elisabeth Rynning has written a large number of scholarly works published in Sweden and abroad, mainly in the field of medical law, and in particular concerning privacy issues in healthcare and research, and the use of new technologies. She has also participated in research projects involving the Nordic countries and other European countries, primarily concerning privacy protection issues.
In the role of expert and adviser, Elisabeth Rynning has participated in a number of commissions of inquiry on patient data, data protection measures in healthcare and social care, and biobanks among other things. Furthermore, she has been a board member of the National Centre for Knowledge on Men's Violence against Women and of the Swedish Agency for Health and Care Services Analysis, as well as a member of the Swedish Research Council’s expert panel on research ethics, and of the Swedish Press Council.
