Exciting lectures await during the week. This photo was taken during the 2019 Conferment Ceremony when Lena Fries Gedin became an honorary doctor.

In the week leading up to the Conferment Ceremony, Uppsala University is arranging open lectures and panel discussions with this year’s new honorary doctors. A wide range of subjects will be covered, with the honorary doctors discussing areas such as social media, communication during crises and the causes of asthma.


The new honorary doctors will also be inaugurated at the Doctoral Degree Conferment Ceremony on 27 January. This year, 24 people have been selected to become honorary doctors following outstanding scholarly contributions or through their promotion of research at the University in some other way. Some of them will travel to Uppsala in the days leading up to the Conferment Ceremony to hold lectures and take part in seminars.

24 January, 15:15–18:00: Managing public information during pandemics and other crises

Ulrika Björkstén, new honorary doctor at the Faculty of Arts, will give a lecture entitled Konsten att vara tydlig med ett osäkert budskap (‘The art of clarity when dealing with an unclear message’). The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion with Ulrika Björkstén, Folke Tersman, Anders Björkman, Maja Fjaestad and Anders Ekström. The lecture and panel discussion will be held in Swedish.

25 January, 15:15–18: Public libraries and their role in democracy and popular education – what does this mean in the 21st century?

Lecture by Ragnar Audunson, new honorary doctor at the Faculty of Arts. After the lecture, Kerstin Rydbeck will present a Nordic anthology that connects with the theme of the lecture. The event will be held in Norwegian and Swedish.

25 January, 17:00-18:00: Academic outreach via social media – from medicine and politics to football analytics

What opportunities and challenges does the use of social media entail for spreading knowledge to the public? Panel discussion with Agnes Wold, new honorary doctor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Ashok Swain and David Sumpter. The panel discussion will be held in English.

26 January, 10:00–12:00: Honorary Doctorate Colloquia in Physics

The Department of Physics is hosting three lectures with the new honorary doctors. 

  • Jochen Schneider: Materials Design & Complexity
  • Linda Young: Exploring new scientific frontiers using x-ray free electron lasers
  • Marcos Dracos: Neutrino Physics using the European Spallation Source.

The lectures will be held in English.

The five honorary doctors at the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy will each give a lecture.
