Libraries in the time of war - symposium in Uppsala
At a symposium at Uppsala University on March 16, speakers from Ukraine, the US and Ireland shared their knowledge and experience on the subject of libraries in wartime.
—The topic is very important. Libraries and cultural heritage are often severely affected during armed conflicts, both from a historical and current perspective. During the day, we shared experiences on how we can work with issues and problems associated with cultural heritage and war, both preventively, during ongoing conflict, and for a long time afterwards, says Associate Professor Peter Sjökvist, librarian at Uppsala University Library.
The topics included:
- The history and legacy of libraries during wartime.
- How collections can be saved from looting and destruction.
- The legacy of conflict. Institutional ownership of stolen or looted cultural heritage.
- Legal complications in the restoration of cultural heritage.
The symposium was recorded and is available on YouTube.
