Stina Syvänen, Professor at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences, is awarded the Erik K. Fernström Foundation’s prize for younger, particularly promising researchers, 2023, for her outstanding research on Alzheimer’s disease with a particular focus on new antibody formats designed to cross the blood-brain barrier.

Stina Syvänen is Professor of Molecular Geriatrics at the Department of Public Health and Caring Sciences at Uppsala University. Since 2021, she leads a successful research group in molecular geriatrics. Her work has resulted in a deeper understanding of the pharmacokinetics of antibodies in the brain.

The prize committee’s statement

“Stina Syvänen conducts successful research on Alzheimer’s disease, with a particular focus on new antibody formats designed to cross the blood-brain barrier. The modified antibodies can then be utilised for both therapy and diagnostics. The research group is the first to show, in vivo, that it is possible to use antibodies to generate PET images of Alzheimer’s pathology in the brain. Stina Syvänen’s research is characterised by interdisciplinary innovation, and she consistently has a strong translational line in her research.”

The prize consists of a monetary award and a diploma. The laureates will be honoured at the autumn award ceremony during Research Day in Lund.

The Erik K Fernströms prize

  • Every year, the Eric K. Fernström Foundation awards a Nordic prize to a medical researcher from one of the Nordic countries and national prizes to young researchers at the medical faculties in Sweden. The award ceremonies are the festive conclusion of Research Day in Lund.
  • The Faculty of Medicine at Lund University has collaborated with the Foundation since 1978, when Eric K. Fernström, Honorary Doctor of Medicine, established the Eric K. Fernström Foundation through a donation.
