Chang Hyun Park, researcher in computer engineering, and Johanna Chamberlain, researcher in law, have been awarded this year’s Oscar Prize. They will receive the award at the University’s anniversary celebration on 7 October.

Uppsala University awards the Oscar Prize annually to promising early-career researchers at the University. The prize sum of SEK 140,000 is divided between two recipients each year.

Chang Hyun Park holds a doctorate from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and is now an assistant professor at the Department of Information Technology. His research focuses on making computers more efficient, which could lead to reduced energy consumption and lower carbon dioxide emissions.

From the award citation: “Chang Hyun Park’s research focuses on designing new computer architectures that are efficient and have high performance. Specifically, his work on virtual memory systems has led to several high-profile publications and some of his results have been incorporated into the standard for commercial processors. He has also received many prestigious research grants, such as a starting grant from the Swedish Research Council and a grant for collaboration with South Korea.”

Johanna Chamberlain obtained her doctorate in law in 2020 and is currently a senior lecturer at the Department of Business Studies. Her research has related, among other things, to the emerging regulation of AI at EU level. This autumn she will start a new project on PFAS damages.

From the award citation: Johanna Chamberlain “has used her methodological tools and knowledge to shed light on contemporary challenges in areas such as tort law, privacy law, AI law and EU law in a number of weighty articles. She is an outstanding young researcher and one to whom the highest hopes can be pinned with regard to continued writing on jurisprudence at the University.”

The Oscar Prize

Uppsala University awards the Oscar Prize annually to young researchers at Uppsala University “whose scientific writing is the most deserving and offers the greatest promise of continued academic writings at the University”.

The prize money of SEK 140,000 consists of the returns on a donation made by King Oscar II upon the University’s 400th anniversary in 1877 and may be shared between two equally deserving researchers.

The recipients are selected by the University Board, acting on a proposal from a committee consisting of the deans of the faculties.
