Researchers Eva Darulova, from the Department of Information Technology, and Chia-Hsien Shein, from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, have been awarded Starting Grants from the European Research Council, ERC. The grant is aimed at researchers at the beginning of their career.

In total, 494 researchers across Europe will receive EUR 1.5 million each to develop their research and build up their research groups. 22 of the researchers have a Swedish host institution, with two of them working at Uppsala University.

Eva Darulova Bruggisser is Associate Professor in Computing Science specialised in programming languages at the Department of Information Technology, Uppsala University. She will receive the grant for the HORNET project: Holistic Rigorous Numerical Verification.

She will develop new automated techniques for verifying and debugging numerical programs, focusing on ensuring their accuracy. Thanks to this ERC grant, she can assemble a research group.

“I am super excited about this project! Receiving the ERC grant validates the importance of addressing the challenges in numerical verification, and will allow me to focus on this project in the next 5 years. I am especially happy that this grant provides me with the resources to develop both the theoretical foundations and to also explore practical applications,” says Darulova Bruggisser.

Chia-Hsien Shein is a researcher in Theoretical Physics at National Taiwan University in Taiwan, but plans to come to Uppsala University in September 2025 as a researcher at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. He will receive funding for the AmpEFT project: Scattering Amplitudes for Effective Field Theory: Simplicity and Structures from Classical to Quantum.

“I am absolutely thrilled about this opportunity! With the support from the ERC, I will be able to establish a research group to conduct a comprehensive study of effective field theory using modern tools from scattering amplitudes. This direction also resonates with the other research groups in the Uppsala physics department. I can’t wait to embark on this journey.”

European Research Counsil(ERC)

The ERC, set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. Each year, it selects the best and most creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run projects based across Europe. The ERC awards four types of grant: Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants and Synergy Grants.
