University criticised for unclear information about resit

The Swedish Higher Education Authority has investigated complaints from two students who claim that the University acted incorrectly in its handling of their resit exams. In its decision, the Swedish Higher Education Authority has no comment regarding the examination options offered, but the University is criticised for providing unclear information to the students.

One of the tasks of the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) is to exercise supervision of higher education institutions. UKÄ has investigated a case in which two students claim that they were not offered a resit for a course at the right time. The course in which they were due to take a resit had been discontinued in its previous form, and they had both been away on an exchange programme for a semester. In their complaint, the students claim that a resit in August cannot be regarded as belonging to the spring semester and that as a result of the way the University handled the matter, they were unable to continue their studies as planned.

In its decision, UKÄ has no comment to make on the examination dates offered by the University, nor does it object to the University treating resits held in August as belonging to the spring semester. However, UKÄ criticises the University for providing information to the students in question that in some respects was inconsistent or unclear.

UKÄ does not comment on the issue of the students’ ability to continue their studies, but notes that the University has granted an exemption and recognised the credits earned during the exchange semester in such a way as to enable the students to continue as planned, provided they pass the resit.
