Anders Wall, an honorary member of Uppsala University, is turning 80, and this is being marked by Uppsala University, together with the Kjell and Märta Beijer Foundation, establishing a scholarship fund in his name for students from China.

The fund amounts to SEK 4 million per year over five years and is to be used for scholarships to pay all or parts of the tuition fee for students from China. This can involve education at both the basic and advanced levels and can cover one or more academic years. The background is that tuition fees have been introduced for third-country (outside the EU) students, which has entailed that considerably fewer such students are applying for studies in Sweden. The scholarship fund will amount to a total of SEK 20 million, enough to defray tuition expenses for at least 100 students.

“I am deeply honoured,” says Anders Wall. “This is an excellent initiative on the part of Uppsala University that will help forge closer relations with China – a country that is impacting the future of the entire world. I am convinced that in the long run this will benefit both the Uppsala region and Sweden in general.”

“Uppsala University is a global player in both research and education. The scholarship fund means we can maintain and develop our excellent international educational environment,” says Vice Chancellor Anders Hallberg.

Decisions about recipients of the scholarship will be made by a committee consisting of a representative of the Kjell and Märta Beijer Foundation, the chair of the Uppsala University Scholarship Fund, and a representative of the University with special knowledge about foreign grading systems. The scholarship will be available from 2012.
