Microbiology is a new focus area for Clinical Genomics Uppsala
Clinical Genomics Uppsala has strengthened its focus on infectious diseases by establishing a new work package for microbiology in collaboration with Uppsala University Hospital. The initial projects focus on development of improved methods for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics and monitoring.

“I am convinced that this collaboration will contribute to a faster development of novel sequencing methods in medical microbiology.” says René Kaden, associate professor and microbiologist at the Clinical Microbiology department at Uppsala University Hospital and leader of the new work package for Microbiology. René is also the regional coordinator for Genomic Medicine Sweden’s work package for infectious diseases. His own research focuses on molecular epidemiology, taxonomy and evolution of microorganisms.
The initial projects focus on improved methods and infrastructure for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics and monitoring of emerging new viral variants. The work is performed in close collaboration with Genomic Medicine Sweden’s working group for infectious diseases. Several of the SARS-CoV-2 projects are also part of the SciLifeLab COVID-19 research program. Future plans include developing of diagnostic tests for multi-resistant bacteria (MRSA), Chlamydia and parasites. The microbiology work package has been strengthened with a newly recruited bioinformatician, Ida Karlsson.
Clinical Genomics Uppsala (CGU) was established in 2013 to support translational and clinical research and facilitate adaptation and implementation of advanced genomic technologies for use in healthcare. Since the start, CGU has been a collaboration between Uppsala University, Uppsala University Hospital (sections for Clinical Genetics and Clinical Pathology) and SciLifeLab. The previous work packages include solid tumors, hematology, inherited diseases and informatics.
