About the research program:
The relation between higher education and democracy is an essential one: universities and higher education have the role of educating and fostering democratic citizens, and democratic institutions and principles are required to provide universities with a secure space for the free and unconditional pursuit of knowledge and truth. The relationship between higher education and democracy is, however, a multifaceted one, and one that cannot be taken for granted. We know relatively little about this intricate relationship and how it plays out in different contexts and in relation to a variety of issues. As democratic values and practices are threatened, and academic freedom called into question, we need to better understand the characteristics as well as the intricacies of this relationship, how it plays out in a variety of contemporary as well as historical contexts. We also need to problematize this relationship, and discuss both its problematic and beneficial outcomes for society. This research program asks the question: How can we better understand the multifaceted relationship between democracy and higher education, and its impact on the future of democratic societies?
