In the context of professor Roderick Ferguson’s (Yale University) visit, Democracy and Higher Education gathers scholars at Uppsala University working on projects pertaining to social protests in conjunction with higher education.
Three presentations, followed by discussions, reflect on the problem and limits of the university as a democratic space and as a space where democracy is being shaped. Drawing from different contexts and forms of expression, participants investigate how student protest may move out from the university into other spaces and take various cultural forms in totalitarian states, how the university may become a violent arena for political conflicts in unstable states, and how fiction represents and shapes social protests.
