Joakim Medin and Deniz Yüzel
Meet journalists Joakim Medin and Deniz Yücel, both of whom have been imprisoned in Turkey on charges of terrorism-related crimes while carrying out their journalistic work.
Led by Kholod Saghir, writer and artistic director of the Uppsala International Literature Festival, they discuss restrictions on freedom of expression, political imprisonment, and the conditions for intellectuals in today's Turkey.
Deniz Yücel is a German-Turkish journalist and publicist who works as a correspondent for Die Welt, among other things. Between February 2017 to February 2018, he was imprisoned in Turkey on charges of terrorism-related crimes after publishing revelations about Turkey's then-energy minister and President Erdogan's son-in-law, Berat Albayrak. Since 2022, he has been the spokesperson for PEN Berlin and has written the book Agentterrorist about his time in prison.
Joakim Medin is a foreign correspondent for Dagens ETC and writes mainly about democracy and human rights issues, right-wing populism, and international conflicts. He has been covering Turkey's authoritarian development for many years. Last spring, he was imprisoned in Turkey, accused of insulting President Erdogan. In the fall of 2025, a legal process will continue in which Turkey equates his journalism with terrorism.
