Jacob Färnert: Främst bland likar: En studie av ämnesbakgrund och andra rekryteringsmönster hos rektorer vid svenska universitet och högskolor 1977–2025:
"Through a number of reforms, the influence of vice-chancellors at Swedish higher education institutions has increased, which motivates a more in-depth analysis of their backgrounds. The study draws on previous research and examines the disciplinary background of vice-chancellors in relation to the hierarchies of the academic field. The results point to a shift towards STEM disciplines, particularly at research-intensive institutions, while external candidates have become a popular feature in the recruitment of vice-chancellors."
Lars Engwall: The Competition for Academic Top Leadership:
"Traditionally, professors took turns serving as vice-chancellors for a few years. Over time, however, terms of office have become longer and the selection of vice-chancellors from outside has become increasingly common. This is clearly evident when vice-chancellor recruitments at the 50 top universities in the AVWU ranking over 50 years are analysed. These changes have taken place in an increasingly internationalised market for academic leaders."
