Investigation of commercial potential of Prussian White based Sodium Batteries

Time period:
1 August 2018 – 31 December 2022
Funder:
Swedish Energy Agency
Type of award:
Project grant
Total funding:
3,787,000 SEK

The aim of the project is to investigate aging phenomena in NIBs based on the low-cost, low environmental-impact material “Prussian White” (Na2Fe2(CN)6) for stationary energy storage applications. The rapid expansion in demand for rechargeable batteries, related to the imminent construction of multiple “giga-factories”, has initiated concerns about the availability of lithium, cobalt and nickel. Contrary to Li, which is only mined in a few countries, sodium is globally abundant. Thus, sodium ion batteries (NIBs), using only naturally abundant elements as the electrode materials will enable sustainable massive-scale development of rechargeable batteries.
