The impact of charging strategies on the electric car’s battery system.

Time period:
1 January – 31 December 2023
Funder:
Swedish Energy Agency
Type of award:
Project grant
Total funding:
874,120 SEK

Charging strategies are being developed to, for example, contribute to faster charging, more flexible charging, balance the electricity grid or contribute to cost reductions for charging. But how are the batteries affected by new ways of charging the electric car? This project aims to create a deeper understanding of charging an electric vehicle can affect the battery system. How the car is charged will affect the lifespan and function of the electric car battery, and thus the entire lifespan of the car. The pros and cons of different possible charging strategies will be mapped based on how they can affect the car battery in the short and long term. The reverse will also be studied: how the electric car battery can be designed to contribute to a desired charging strategy, such as faster charging in cold climates. The electrification of the transport sector in society will require sustainability from an environmental, social, and economic perspective.
