TriLi – Long Life Lithium Electrodes for EV and HEV Batteries

Time period:
11 February 2014 – 31 December 2019
Funder:
Swedish Energy Agency
Type of award:
Project grant
Total funding:
9,967,752 SEK

This project aims for safe batteries with a target of 250 Wh/kg and 800 Wh/l with metallic lithium as anode. The goal is to inhibit dendrite formation and to test concepts in battery cells with different cathodes: high voltage, iron-based, organic and sulfur. Four different concepts to protect lithium from dendrites will be used. This gives powerful lithium batteries for vehicles with lower total weight and increased energy content. The studies will be done with a life cycle perspective. The budget comprises: LCA, PhD students, a research associate, support for junior scientists and for an interface to the automotive industry. A team consisting of ÅABC (Ångström Advance Battery Center) K. Edström (project leader), T. Gustafsson, D. Brandell, F. Björefors will work with L. Nyholm Electrochemistry, M. Strömme Nanomaterials U. Jansson, Thin Film Synthesis, all Uppsala University, M. Zackrisson, Swerea IVF and H. Berg Libergreen. D. Abraham from ANL will act as an international advisor.
