Development and evaluation of performance and environmental impact of organic batteries

Time period:
1 July 2019 – 31 December 2021
Funder:
Swedish Energy Agency
Type of award:
Project grant
Total funding:
3,932,112 SEK

The aim of the project is to enable introduction of an organic battery on the market which can complement today's batteries. The battery type in this application is well suited for large-scale energy storage due to its inherent safety, low electrolyte costs, favorable raw material availabilipty and ease of end-of-life-disposal. Initially the performance of an organic battery prototype will be evaluated and summarized in a product data sheet for communication with end users. Furthermore, the strengths and weaknesses of the battery will be identified in performance comparisons with existing battery technology and in a complete life cycle assessment (LCA). In phase two of the project, identified weaknesses will be used to improve the battery towards a competitive product. The project is carried out in collaboration between Uppsala University and the Swedish Agricultural University.
