The WiseEST platform – Enabling Sustainable Technology Transitions

WiseEST supports sustainable technology transitions by providing a specialized, application-focused testing and analysis facility, along with tribological expertise.

Too often, sustainable technology transitions are hindered by unexpected friction and wear issues, and WiseEST aims to address these challenges effectively. Gaining deeper understanding and valuable insights into optimizing new materials, coatings, and lubricants will help ensure that sustainable solutions become competitive, widely accepted, and extensively adopted.

WiseEST has two nodes, equipped with advanced tools and extensive experience in both tribological testing and materials analysis. More information about each node can be found on their respective pages.

Uppsala node: Tribomaterials Group at Uppsala University

Luleå node: Machine Elements Division at Luleå Technical University

With funding form WISE

WiseEST is funded by the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE), which supports investments in new equipment at the two labs in Uppsala and Luleå through its research technology platforms (RTPs) scheme. This funding has enabled the acquisition of advanced testing equipment for evaluating materials under relevant, demanding, and application-mimicking conditions, complementing the existing resources of the two tribology groups.

Additionally, WISE has supported the procurement of state-of-the-art materials analysis tools, incorporating techniques that push the boundaries of what is possible.

More on Tribology

Tribology is an interdisciplinary subject dealing with the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. In any contact between two surfaces there is an influence of tribological phenomena such as wear, friction, contact stress, tribo-corrosion, and fatigue. Such phenomena have a tremendous negative impact on energy efficiency, service life, reliability, safety, productivity, and robustness.

WiseEST offers world-class and versatile tribological testing facilities and extensive and advanced materials analysis capabilities, combined with the experience of tribology experts from two leading universities in tribology. Three aspects of WiseEST allows it to make significant contributions to materials science and sustainability:

  • The platform offers immediate impact – enabling important transitions to sustainable technologies and speeding up their implementation.
  • The platform offers wide impact – addressing tools, mechanical components and larger systems, focusing on improving their energy efficiency during use
  • Extending the lifetime of tools and components, extends their use phases, offer a transition from a circular to a green elliptical economy.
