The Swedish Kidney Foundation recently awarded a total of SEK 7,5 million in research grants, nearly one million of which has been allocated to researchers at Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital.
Six researchers from the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy have received grants in this year’s allocation, four of whom are based at the Department of Medical Sciences and two at the Department of Surgical Sciences.
One of them is Henrik Benoni, Specialist Physician at the Department of Surgical Sciences and has been awarded his grant for a project investigating cancer in the context of organ transplantation. The project examines how the lifelong immunosuppressive treatment required to prevent rejection of a transplanted kidney, may influence cancer risk.
– Our research aims to identify genetic risk markers that could help predict the likelihood of different types of cancer following transplantation, thereby enabling us to tailor both immunosuppressive treatment and cancer screening. We are also investigating the best approaches for monitoring transplanted patients with cancer to improve their prognosis, says Henrik Benoni in a statement to the Swedish Kidney Foundation.
