Strong interest in the new Honorary Doctors

Eva Nyström held an inspiring lecture on the Linnaeus Correspondence.
A total of four new Honorary Doctors were appointed at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy. They attracted considerable attention when delivering their traditional honorary doctorate lectures in the University Main Building.

Professor Peter Langguth is the newest Honorary Doctor at the Faculty of Pharmacy.
Almost 100 people attended Hall X in the University Main Building for this year’s honorary doctorate lectures. Dr Hans Kluge, Dr Elinor Karlsson, and the Historian of Ideas Eva Nyström began with lectures as the new Honorary Doctors for the Faculty of Medicine, before the day concluded with Dr Peter Langguth, the Faculty of Pharmacy’s newest Honorary Doctor.

Dr. Hans Kluge, Regional Director for WHO Europe, is one of the new Honorary Doctors at the Faculty of Medicine.
“Honoured and privileged”
The Honorary Doctors arrived at the University Main Building in high spirits, eager for the lectures.
“It is wonderful to be here, and I am so honoured and delighted by this recognition,” stated Elinor Karlsson, before Dr Hans Kluge shared his perspective.
“I have only just arrived, but it feels as though I have been here for years. Soorej (Jose Puthoopparambil, Dr Kluge’s promotor) has introduced me in various forums, and I have met students and many different groups. I feel welcomed and well taken care of”, he said.

Dr. Elinor Karlsson held an interesting lecture.
How does it feel to have been appointed Honorary Doctors at Uppsala University?
“It is a great honour. The world needs collaboration to strengthen global health and to be able to manage any future pandemic, not reduce cooperation,” said Dr Kluge, continuing:
“Health diplomacy is the key to success and has guided my career. Uppsala University is a pioneer, doing fantastic work, with Soorej Jose Puthoopparambil driving the WHO Collaborating Centre for Migration and Health. Medicine and global health are central to WHO’s work, and I am pleased that this is now recognised through the honorary doctorate.”
“It is an honour. Science is such a large part of my world, and much of it is about solving problems in human medicine. I owe a great deal to Uppsala University. Together with Professor Kerstin Lindblad-Toh, I co-led a comparison of 240 mammalian genomes, contributing to our understanding of the human genome – all the way into clinical care,” said Dr Karlsson.

Hans Kluge and Soorej Jose Puthoopparambil took their time talking to students before the reception at the U(niversity Main Building.
Ceremony and reception
The lectures appeared to be greatly appreciated by the audience. The following day, the Doctoral Conferment Ceremony took place in the University Main Building’s Grand Auditorium, where all new Doctors and Honorary Doctors from the faculties received their doctoral hats. This was followed by a reception in the faculty rooms of the University Main Building.
