Curating medical heritage: reconciliation and indigeneity

Welcome to a three-day workshop explores aspects of curating medical heritage from the perspectives of indigeneity and reconciliation

Programme

Day 1: We work with the photographic archives Swedish Institute for Race Biology, and discuss what it entails to be the custodian, and work with this collection, as an archivist. In the afternoon we view Katarina Pirak Sikku installation Agálaččat bivttastuvvon sohkagotti ivnniiguin/Ihkát ájttegij bájnoj gárvodum/ För evigt klädda i ättens färger/Ihkuven aajkan maadtoej klaeriejgujmie gåårveldihkie/Perpetually Wound in the Colors of the Ancestors (2021) that is a comment to the archives Swedish Institute for Race Biology. Katarina Pirak Sikku will talk about her artistic work and and Allison Morehead (Queens University, Canada) enter into a conversation with her.

Day 2: We visit the Hagströmer library at Karolinska institutet and discuss the process of repatriating the remains of Sámi women Catarina Larsdotter.

Day 3: We visit the Museum of Medical History and view their new exhibition, after which we discuss the role that art can play in reconciling with the past.

The workshop is organised as a collaboration between the Matariki-network: Curating medical humanities, the Circus network: Heritage Transformations and the Centre for Medical Humanities.
