When thinking about assessment, our minds drift easily to the end-of-course final written exam, aimed at checking how much students have learnt, and deciding which grade they will be awarded. But assessment is of course much more than that. What other kinds of assessment are there, what are their advantages and challenges, and how can we integrate them so that they become more a part of the learning process, and not just the final hurdle to be feared?
In this seminar, we will consider the roles of assessment in teaching and learning, from both student and teacher perspectives. We will discuss how assessment strategies can be adapted to encourage students to engage with and acquire different kinds of knowledge and skills in science and technology. Practical aspects of their implementation will also be discussed. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences of different assessment strategies, and also to ask questions about how to tackle specific situations.
While an independent seminar in its own right, this seminar is also the first within the TUR course Examination and Assessment in Science and Technology (EAST). Everyone is welcome, and those intending to follow the EAST course are particularly encouraged to attend this seminar.
Register to tur-teknat@uu.se no later than January 20.
Welcome
