How well does engineering programs prepare students to handle current and future societal challenges? We will discuss this based on the paper “Emerging learning environments in engineering education”.

This paper states that “three major challenges, sustainability, the fourth industrial revolution, and employability, will require new types of engineering programs”. The authors describe four responses in current engineering programs, “student-centred learning, integration of theory and practice, digital and online learning, and the definition of professional competencies,” and further propose that programs in the future should incorporate “more personalised curriculum models”.

At the seminar we will talk in more detail about courses and programs at Uppsala University. What are the most important emerging trends? How much do we need to adapt? Which pedagogical ideas should we pursue?
